James had experienced relationship issues which led to periods of homelessness and staying with friends. He was referred to the SYFS Foyer, a service combining accommodation with education, training and employment supports.James was suffering from low self-esteem, he had mental health issues that were affecting his ability to live independently and to engage with training and employment.
Staff were able to work with James to build confidence in himself and studying. They provided a range of practical support including advocacy with TAFE and other providers to engage and complete training courses.
The generous donation from Rotary has assisted in providing study assistance for James, including course materials, transport and access to the internet. With support James completed a Certificate II in Hospitality and has quickly gained casual employment. He has now maintained this for 9 months and continues to receive positive feedback from his workplace. The support provided by the qualified youth workers and meeting his practical needs has also assisted him to live more independently.
