Southern Youth and Family Services (SYFS) provide services to the very disadvantaged groups in our community – vulnerable, unemployed, homeless, young people, families, victims of child abuse, domestic violence and people who need specialised assistance such as those facing mental health issues.
It provides emergency accommodation, supported transitional accommodation and housing, social housing, counselling, mediation, health, education, training and employment support, and many other services.
It is imperative to raise funds from the community to fill the service gaps with SYFS looking to the community for help and that help in the last couple of years has come from Rotary through Rotary’s Ride4Rotary,” Ms Clay said.
In 2015, with Rotary’s assistance we assisted 2184 vulnerable young people across the organisation.
The 2016 Ride for Rotary was an outstanding event raising in excess of $19,000. This is just confirmation of Rotary’s commitment, talent and dedication to helping the community.
These funds are being directed to the education, training and employment needs of 50 young people,” Ms Clay said.
It is essential to understand that these young people are severely disadvantaged, and face many social barriers.
These barriers can prevent them achieving goals that most people in the community take for granted for young people. Without the extra assistance they would not achieve in education, training or employment.
The Rotary event itself has grown in size and has become a fun event. This is a credit to the members of Rotary who really put themselves out to make it such a successful event.
Participating this year were SYFS board members, staff and young people – some who had been painfully shy, scared and lacking confidence.
A young woman with a disability had pulled out, changed her mind and rode. Another had been going through a really hard time and was just coming to watch but changed her mind, rode and loved it.
One young Aboriginal boy who is very shy also accepted some encouragement and did the ride and did it proudly.
The Rotary Clubs are committed to continuing with this flagship event – another example of Rotary continuing to make a difference in our community.
